Gearing up

Couple of things..

First: Saw Iron Man 2 last night with Doctor Merkury and Mongo and a couple other comic-book-loving nerds.  It was really quite good, though I'm not sure I liked it better than the first.   One thing it had going for it:

Second: I'm reading the rules for Fortress America, for a game this weekend with the Doctor, my son Alex & someone else I can't remember.   Been ages since I played this one, thought it's coming back to me.

This game should have a Red Dawn expansion, with a Patrick Swazye character running around sabotaging enemy units.  I will post a review after the game.

Wait, what?

Ok, so I remembered I have a blog.  And I was going to blog about gaming stuff.  And maybe other stuff.  And my grammar and sentence structure suck.   So...wait, what's my point?

I dunno.  But I guess I'll come up with something to talk about.

1.  Played Arkham Horror for the first time last weekend.  Thanks for hosting us Mongo!  I like the game, unlike SOME people at the table who evidently brought their grouchy pants.  There is a learning curve to be sure.  I felt like I needed several turns to even get my bearings on what I was supposed to do,  how the gates worked, and how to best keep ahead of the game.  Of course, by then, we were screwed.  We had 3 gates sealed I think, and I closed another, but was not able to get it sealed.  I underestimated the importance of that, as beasties kept creeping out everywhere.   Now that I have a sense of how the game flows, I would really like to try it again.

2.  Been playing Pandemic a lot lately with the family.  Clever game, and insidiously difficult to beat.  It's one of those games where efficiency is paramount, and each turn needs to be maximized, or the diseases can get out of control very quickly.

3.  I downloaded a complete customized print-and-play version of Wiz War that I found somewhere-  through BoardGameGeek I think.  Artwork is very nice - I am considering trying to make my own copy of this game, since it seems destined to never be printed again, and Ebay prices are asinine ($200+).  Maybe I'll blog my progress on it if I decide to try it.

The WBC Geekathon - 2009

Here are some of the games I played at the WBC this past week. I only wish I could have hung in until the end, but alas, family stuff comes first!

BATTLESTAR GALACTICA - Finally got to play this - it's a fantastic game! Lots of intrigue and lots to do. I was Gaius Baltar, and started as a Cylon (Baltar is tough because he starts with 2 Loyalty cards, which makes him a suspicious target from turn 1). Game was slightly dampered by a whiner at the table who got upset when someone else threw him in the brig. Still the
rest of us had a lot of fun. Oh, and the Cylons won! YAY TOASTERS!

STOCK CAR CHAMPIONSHIP RACING CARD GAME - I saw this played last year with a giant oval track and 1/24 scale NASCAR cards. I knew I wanted to try this in 2009. I did, and was not disappointed! A great fast playing racing game. I just wish it was still in print!

KINGSBURG - A fairly typical resource management game, but enjoyed it. I managed to do fairly well, finishing 3rd out of 6.

RACE FOR THE GALAXY - Hooked up with Dave & Marco (and a 4th - sorry I forget this name). Good close game. I managed to get the Alien Robotic factory, but I think I took a little too long to get rolling.

DOMINION - played this multiple times. I really like this game. Scratches the Magic deck-building itch while not requiring me to take out a second mortgage on my house.

POWERBOATS - played this as a demo. Not bad and fast playing racing game. Nifty 3-sided dice too.

TITAN - Good old fashioned monster bashing in on Avalon Hill classic. We were assigned a 5 player game, which is not my preference as the board gets too crowded. I got stomped early and eliminated when one of my opponents stumbled on my Titan stack right after I split it. I knew I should have waited to split - ARRRGH!

FORMULA MOTOR RACING - Another simple card game of Formula One racing. Played twice - demo & tourney. Finished 3rd at my table, but our table had a ball - cheering and going crazy.

LE HAVRE - Ah, the new Euro game darling. nothing terribly new here, place a worker, get resources, build stuff, lather rinse repeat. There is a pretty wide decision tree though, and lots of resources and paths. Pretty good game, but needs a few plays to figure out the best ways to generate VPs.

KAISER'S PIRATES - Played this multiple times & scored a copy (it sold out at the con). Card game of World War I merchant boats and German raiders. Similar to Enemy in Sight. I do like this game quite a bit.

Velcomen, bienvenue, velcome, come on in

Well here is my blog. I'll be putting tales and thoughts and whatever about my board gaming sickness...I mean hobby.

I've been gaming in one form or another since I was about 10 years old. Now I play games regularly at home with my family, with friends (Mongo & Doc Merkury, I'm looking in your direction!), or at my Friendly Local Gaming Store - Six Feet Under games (yes this is a shameless plug!).

More to follow, don't touch that dial!
